This paper, initially conceived as an appendix to a forthcoming History of Lichenology, presents brief biographical accounts of 611 lichenologists who were active before the end of the 20th century. We have sought to cover the principal lichenological contributions of each individual, not merely recording the bare facts but, where possible, illuminating the circumstances surrounding their work. These short biographies will constitute an initial baseline for an online searchable database, which is intended to be expanded and amended in the coming years by the lichenological community.
