A new subspecies of the trans-Adriatic Asperula staliana from the Isole Tremiti: subsp. diomedea, and its ecology

Abstract

A new Tremiti Islands endemie from eoastallimestone roeks is described as A.slaliana subsp. diomedea. Relevés document that - as a weak eompetitor- it is not linked to a partieular plant eommunity. The new subspeeies represents the southwestemmost element of a trans-Adriatie group of cJosely related vicarious, tetraploid (2n = 40) island taxa, represented on Bisevo (A. slaliana subsp. sialiana and subsp. arenaria), Vis (A. slaliana subsp. issaea) and Sv. Andrija (A. visianii). The group is compared with other taxa of similar eeology and distribution, and briefly discussed in its phytogeographieal signifieance.
