Aspects of the reproductive biology of the 9 wild Iberian species of Sonchus and Aetheorhiza, plus one additional subspecies and an interspecific hybrid, have been studied. Comparison between fruit set in bagged and freely poliinated flower heads indicates that xenogamy is prevalent in most species, but that some taxa are preferentialIy autogamous. There is a clear correlation between reproductive system and life cycle. The {lollen-ovule index is similarly correlated but also shows clinal differences within single capltula. Xenogamy appears to be the primitive condition within the group. The evolutionary shift to self-fcrtility has entailed a change in flower head diameter, in floral pigmentation, and in longevity of the florets and flower heads. '
The author reports the results of thc herborizations earried out on 22 small islands loeated in thc arehipelago of Maddalena (north-castcrn Sardinia). 155 taxa denoting a rcmarkable genetic diversity werc eollectcd (distributed in III genera and 47 families). The main dangers for these habitat are rcportcd and infonnation regarding their geomorphology and vegetaI landseapc is supplied. Morcover, a notablc f10ristic contribution eonceming some of the main islands of the archipclago is supplied.
A new Tremiti Islands endemie from eoastallimestone roeks is described as A.slaliana subsp. diomedea. Relevés document that - as a weak eompetitor- it is not linked to a partieular plant eommunity. The new subspeeies represents the southwestemmost element of a trans-Adriatie group of cJosely related vicarious, tetraploid (2n = 40) island taxa, represented on Bisevo (A. slaliana subsp. sialiana and subsp. arenaria), Vis (A. slaliana subsp. issaea) and Sv. Andrija (A. visianii). The group is compared with other taxa of similar eeology and distribution, and briefly discussed in its phytogeographieal signifieance.
The results of morpho-anatomical studies on0_ Limollium albidum_ (Guss.) Pignatti, Limonium intermedium (Guss.) Brullo and Limonium lopadusanum Brullo, all endemie to the Pelagic Islands, reveal xeromorphous characters in the root, flowering stem and leaf, indicating ecological adaptation to their respective habitat.
Cystoseira jabukae Ercegovic, a Mediterranean endemie previously known from the Adriauc Sea, western Italy (Salerno), Sicily and Sardinia, has been found by the Balearic Islands Mallorca and Cabrera. Morphology and ecology of the collected specimens are discussed.
Ophrys xmaladroxiensis, a new natural hybrid between O. holoserica and O. morisii, is described. The new hybrid was found on the island of S. Antioco (southem Sardinia).
The distribution and ecology of criticaI hairy forrns of Galium rotundifolium from southem Italy are examined; these variants are not recognized as a separate taxon. A description of the species is given, and its relationships with G. scabrum are discussed. The latter taxon is excIuded from the flora of southem ltaly.
Riccia cavernosa Hoffm. emendo Raddi and Tortula pagorum (Milde) De Not. are recorded for the first lime from Sicily; the presence in Sicily of Riccia bicarinata Lindb. is confinned, and a new locality for these species is given. Brief notes on the chorology and ecology of the three species are provided.
Limonium brutium is described and illustrated from graniùc rocks near Bagnara (S ltaly). This new species is a halophyte taxonomically related to L. remotispiculum. It characterizes a new association of the Crithmo-Limonietea, named Limonietum brulli.
Three new species of gillcd fungi, Co/lybia eugeniae spec. nov., Lyophy/lum inocybeoides spec. nov. and Conocybe dubia spec. nov. are described from Sardinia. Their ecology as well as the taxonomic placemcnt are discussed. In addition a new combination in Lyophyllum is made.
