New records and notes on the vascular flora of Porto Santo (Madeira Archipelago, Portugal)
New records and notes on the vascular flora of Porto Santo (Madeira Archipelago, Portugal)
New records for the vascular flora of Porto Santo Island (Madeira Archipelago, Portugal) are presented. A total of 13 taxa is reported for the first time, including one possible native species (Trifolium obscurum), one “possible introduced” species (Trifolium repens) and 11 naturalized species. In addition, 12 taxa are confirmed, comprising six native species, including the Madeira endemic Sonchus ustulatus subsp. imbricatus, and six naturalized species. The native Beta macrocarpa, overlooked since 1904, is now documented as widespread on Porto Santo and adjacent islets. The rare Ophioglossum lusitanicum is also confirmed, contradicting previous suggestions of extinction. Clarification is provided regarding Helichrysum melaleucum subsp. roseum, which occurs in both Madeira and Porto Santo, and not exclusively in the latter. Finally, an updated account of the vascular flora of Porto Santo is also presented
